Crystal Browersox was born in America in a poor famer family. She had a fraternal twin brother, Karl, both of them were born in Elliston. Her parents were Ohioto Kelly Lynn Bowersox (née Bowlander) and William Lester Bowersox. At Her age of 2 years her parents were divorced and when she was at 6 she was affected with type 1 diabetes. She studied in Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, and later in Toledo School for the Arts in Toledo, Ohio.at the time of her school she used to play flute in the school marching band. At her age of 10 Bowersox performed her first professional gig at local bars in Toledo. Later when she was at 17 she movied to Chicago and used to play music as a busker at train stations, including the Washington and Lake Redline stops.
Later in the year 2006, she was invited for “Experience Chicago”, held in Birmingham and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs chose Bowersox to represent Chicago folk musicians in the Sister Cities program.
